Indianapolis Colts First Loss: Odds When Colts Will Drop Their First Game

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

The Indianapolis Colts were a surprise team last season, going 9-8 under first-year coach Shane Steichen and competing for the AFC South division title up until the final weekend of the season. It was especially surprising given that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 pick overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, played just four games due to injuries.

Richardson is back healthy, and oddsmakers believe the Colts will stay in the postseason hunt again this season. That doesn’t mean they’re favorites to break a playoff drought dating back to 2020, but they’re not the longest of shots, either.

With the 2024 NFL season kicking off in just more than a week, BetKentucky.com has generated theoretical odds on when the Colts will lose their first game of the season. These odds aren’t available at licensed Kentucky sportsbooks like BetMGM.

The Colts open the season just as they ended last year’s: hosting the Houston Texans. Last year, the Texans won 23-19 at Lucas Oil Stadium to win the AFC South. The Texans, led by 2023 Associated Press Rookie of the Year quarterback C.J. Stroud, are 2.5-point road favorites in the Sept. 8 matchup at DraftKings Kentucky Sportsbook.

Indianapolis could struggle out of the gate this season as their first three games are against the Texans, at the Green Bay Packers and at home versus the Chicago Bears. At Circa Kentucky Sportsbook, the Packers have odds of -165 to make the playoffs, and the Bears are currently priced at -105 to reach the postseason.

Of note: Colts vs Packers Odds & Prediction for Week 2.

Couple the tough early stretch with the erratic play of Richardson during this year’s preseason – he completed just 10 of 18 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown while also throwing an interception returned for a score – and it’s easy to see the Colts starting the 2024 campaign with a record of 1-2 or worse.

Gardner Minshew II helped push the Colts toward the playoffs last year, but he’s now in Las Vegas. If Richardson gets hurt again or is otherwise ineffective, it may be up to Joe Flacco to take over. There’s no debate anymore whether Flacco is an elite quarterback, but he did post a 4-1 record down the stretch last season for the Cleveland Browns, helping the AFC North squad get into the postseason.
