One of the NFL’s brightest young head coaching stars returns to the capital of the Hoosier State for his second season leading the Indianapolis Colts this fall, looking to turn last year’s surprising 9-8 finish into a long-term bout of success across Kentucky sports betting. A year ago, Shane Steichen led Indy to their most year-end wins (nine) since 2021, though the Colts’ postseason drought extended to three years, while this year’s team faces +140 odds on Bet365 to snap that skid.
With a preseason win total over/under of 8.5 on most operators, it’s worth wondering where Steichen can take the Colts in the year ahead, though we’re mostly focused on how he stacks up versus his NFL peers to date.
With that in mind, BetKentucky.com broke down Steichen’s ATS figures to see how the second-year head coach ranks among NFL leaders entering the league’s 2024 regular season.
Category | Percentage | Rank (Among Active Coaches) |
Against The Spread (Overall) | 52.9% | T-11th |
Against The Spread (Home) | 44.0% | 22nd |
Against The Spread (Away) | 63.0% | 3rd |
Against The Spread (Favorite) | 86.0% | 2nd |
Against The Spread (Underdog) | 30.0% | 26th |
Against The Spread (Division) | 50.0% | T-14th |

While the track record is slim, given that Steichen has only been an NFL head coach for one season, it’s worth noting that the former Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator had mixed success ATS in 2023. Last year, he finished with an 86.0% cover rate ATS as the favorite, which ranks second in the NFL, while his 30% cover rate as the underdog in 2023 puts him 26th overall by that category.
In between, Steichen ranks third in the NFL in terms of covering the spread away from Lucas Oil Stadium, at 63.0%, while the second-year NFL head coach is tied for 11th in ATS overall (52.9%) and tied for 14th in terms of covering the spread against divisional foes, at 50.0%.
This year, Steichen will look to bolster those standings, beginning with Indy’s Week 1 showdown at home against the Houston Texans.
