Which Teams Have Worst NFL Draft AV?

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

For the fourth straight season, the Indianapolis Colts will be watching the NFL postseason unfold on television like everyone else, as the AFC South franchise finished 8-9 this year, placing them second out of four teams in the division but out of the postseason race in head coach Shane Steichenā€™s second season with the club.

Since Indyā€™s last postseason romp in 2020, the franchise has posted two winning seasons (going 9-8 in 2021 and 2023), thrown in with a 4-12-1 dud in 2022 and this yearā€™s mediocre, 8-9 campaign, resulting in a four-year playoff drought that few in the Hoosier State have enjoyed watching. To get a sense of the root cause of that postseason hiatus, we looked at the teamā€™s success (or lack thereof) in the NFL Draft.

With the NFL Draft quickly approaching BetKentucky.com was curious what teams have had the lowest amount of success in their draft selections since the 2020 Draft. Our Kentucky sports betting experts used Pro-Football-Reference.com and calculated the average approximate value of each teamā€™s first-round picks between the 2020-2024 NFL drafts.

How Colts Have Fared in NFL Draft

Not well, to put it mildly. Thatā€™s because the Coltsā€™ average approximate value per pick of 7.4 is the fifth lowest total in the 32-team league, sandwiched between the No. 4 Houston Texans (7.2 AV) and the sixth-ranked Cleveland Browns (7.6 AV), though well ahead of the NFLā€™s worst drafting teams of late, including the Los Angeles Rams (2.0 AV), Tennessee Titans (5.2 AV) and the Las Vegas Raiders (5.4 AV).

Since 2020, the Coltsā€™ best performer, AV-wise, has been running back Jonathan Taylor, who has a career AV total of 45 in 67 games with the club, while wideout Michael Pittman (38 AV), defensive lineman Kwity Paye (26 AV), safety Julian Blackmon (21 AV), offensive lineman Bernhard Raimann (17 AV) and wide receiver Alec Pierce (15 AV) are the next best performers for the club over the last half-decade.

Of the nine prospects that Indy added in the 2024 NFL Draft, third-round offensive lineman Matt Goncalves and seventh-round defensive lineman Jonah Laulu had the best rookie years, AV-wise, with each posting values of four AV apiece in 17 games, while wideout Adonai Mitchell and defensive back Jaylon Carlies had AV totals of three apiece this season for the franchise.
