Olympics Tops List
America’s 126 medals at the 2024 Olympics clearly drew some attention in Kentucky, with “Olympics” seeing the largest increase in search interest over last year, up 1,250%. Meanwhile, searches for “Election Results” saw the second largest spike. Both topics represent the two major themes of our Top 10 most searched list — that is, politics and sports.
The one exception would be “New York Times’ Connections,” our third-ranked search term. “Connections” is a daily online word game featuring a 4x4 letter grid, where players are asked to find words and group them into categories.
Turning back to sports, basketballer “Caitlin Clark” checks in at number four on our list of Kentucky’s most searched terms of the year. In 2024, the highly decorated Iowa hoops star made the jump to the WNBA after she was drafted number one overall by the Indiana Fever. Clark led the WNBA in assists and took home the league’s Rookie of the Year award.
On the political front, “Trump” lands as the year’s fifth most searched term in Kentucky. The only surprise here is that the President wasn’t higher up on our list. Between his election win, legal battles, and a failed assassination attempt, no one in America was more newsworthy in 2024 than Donald Trump. Relatedly, “How To Register To Vote In US” was the sixth most searched term in Kentucky this year.
Another pro basketball player, and former first overall draft pick, ranks seventh on our list, with the term “Anthony Edwards” up 130% in 2024. This is presumably due to Ant’s ascendant play on the NBA stage. During the 2023-24 season, he averaged a career-high 25.9 PPG with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Though we’re still in the early stretch of the 2024-25 campaign, so far Anthony Edwards is on track to surpass that total.
College sports represent the next two spots on our list, with “Kentucky Football Schedule 2024” finding the 8th spot, and “Kentucky Baseball” landing in a tie for ninth.
Rounding out our list is the search term “Streameast,” referring to a free internet streaming site that illegally provided major sporting events like football, basketball, and MMA. While massively popular across America, the hijacked sports streams hosted by Streameast violated several broadcasting agreements and were the target of the ire of all major American sports leagues. In August, the website was brought down by U.S. law officials and has effectively been shuttered ever since.
